Crossing Borders Within: Experiencing International Vibes in US Destinations With an RV

Travel Inspiration

Experiencing different cultures is an excellent way to grow as a person and gain a better understanding of the world. The thing is, not everyone can afford to travel internationally, and others prefer road trips over the ideas of air travel or travel by sea.

Fortunately, there are ways to immerse yourself in various cultures right here in the US, meaning no air or sea travel is required—and it’s totally affordable!

Wondering how you might experience new cultures while remaining in the US? Well, believe it or not, there are a huge number of beautiful US towns and cities that still retain much of the culture carried over by their founders so many years ago. These places feature unique architectural styles, international food options, holiday celebrations and festivals found in other parts of the world, and more.

The very best way to immerse yourself in these little pockets of international culture is to visit in an RV. This allows you to take all the amenities of home with you so you can relax in the comfort of your own space after a long day of exposure to new foods, experiences, and ways of doing things.

Here are the best places to take an RV and escape to another place without ever leaving the country.

Horses pulling carriage on Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island, Michigan

First on our list is Mackinac Island in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Many describe a visit to this island as an “escape to another world,” and we have to admit, that is exactly what it feels like. Not only does the place have a completely unique culture, but because there are no cars on the island, it also seems as though you’ve been transported back in time when you visit.

While in Mackinac Island, we highly recommend trying some of the island’s famous fudge, visiting the historic forts there, taking a carriage ride, and strolling the streets to admire the Victorian homes and buildings and take in the unique charm surrounding you. To learn more about the heritage and history of the place, visit Stuart House City Museum and Mackinac Island State Park.

Outdoor activities and camping options nearby

Because you can’t take vehicles onto the island, there isn’t an option to park your RV there. That said, there are plenty of camping options nearby, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a place to stay. Just be sure to book it in advance, as campgrounds do fill up in the summer months!

We highly recommend the Mackinac City/Mackinac Island KOA Journey for those who appreciate amenities and Straits State Park for those looking for a campsite with a view.

Building in the French Quarter of NOLA

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is another one of those US cities that leaves you feeling as though you’ve stepped into another place entirely. The city has a vibrant cultural scene that pulls from both French and southern American culture in a way that is completely unique. This colorful culture was born from the city’s rich and interesting history, something that is well worth learning about.

During your time in New Orleans, make sure to walk around the French Quarter and take in the many sights there. You’ll find beautiful architecture, amazing street performers, and a few museums focusing on the history of the city. Be sure to check out the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park to learn about the art form that was born in NOLA.

You’ll also want to make a point of trying some local cuisine! Crawfish, bananas foster, jambalaya, gumbo, and beignets and chicory coffee from Cafe du Monde are all good picks.

Camping options in the surrounding area

When it comes to camping in or near New Orleans, you have a few good options. People who want to be in the middle of the action should check out French Quarter RV Resort, which is located in the city itself.

Meanwhile, folks who want to camp on a budget or prefer to be immersed in a more natural environment should look into staying at Bayou Sennett State Park. We love that visitors to this park can explore the bayou on boardwalks!

Catalina Island

Catalina Island, California

Catalina Island is a part of California’s Channel Islands, and while it might be located just 22 miles from the mainland, it has the vibe of a Mediterranean island. This coastal paradise is an incredible Island retreat and has a wonderful culture that you are sure to love.

Water sports and hiking are popular activities on Catalina Island, and we highly recommend using some of your getaway to explore the island’s plants and animals, some of which can’t be found anywhere else on earth. You might also want to visit Catalina Island Museum to learn more about the art, history, and culture of this incredible place.

Camping options available for overnight stays

Seeing as visitors are not allowed to drive vehicles on Catalina Island, you will not be able to camp in an RV on the Island. Instead, we recommend parking your RV on the mainland and visiting for the day (or for a single overnight in a tent).

RV campgrounds are plentiful on the mainland. Our top picks for those visiting Catalina Island include Newport Dunes Waterfront RV Resort and Crystal Cove State Park – Moro Campground. Both allow you to use the faster Newport Ferry to Catalina Island.

Feeling extra adventurous? Why not head up to Alaska? Alaska is about as different as it gets without actually leaving the US, and if you drive up from the mainland, you will actually get to experience another country when you drive through Canada.

When you arrive in Alaska, be sure to make a stop in Sitka. This amazing little town has a rich history. The Russian influence is apparent at this, the former capital of Russian America, and the indigenous culture is also still going strong. Together, these two cultures have combined to create something completely unique. Learn about the Sitka culture (and do some wildlife viewing) at Sitka National Historical Park.

Building in Ouray, CO

Ouray, Colorado

Last but not least, we must mention Ouray, Colorado. This little town is known as the “Switzerland of America,” and when you see the mountainous backdrop that surrounds the town on three sides, you’ll understand why. While the town doesn’t actually have any Swiss heritage, it is just far enough off the beaten path to allow you to feel as though you’ve traveled to a far-off land.

Things to do in Ouray include ice climbing and skiing in winter, and hiking in the summer. The Ouray Hot Springs are within walking distance of Main Street and are amazing all year long. Local food can be found at places like Ouray Brewery, Mr. Grumpy Pants Brewing, Silver Eagle Saloon, and Timberline Deli, and it’s well worth catching a show at the historic 1888 Wright Opera House.
